Facebook Sexism Campaign Attracts Thousands Online

Facebook Sexism Campaign Attracts Thousands Online
Thousands of protesters are demanding tougher action from Facebook over posts that they say degrade women. More than 50,000 have tweeted in support of the FBrape campaign and around 5,000 have emailed brands whose advertising appears around the content. The campaign focuses on content that portrays rape and violence against women positively. Facebook has removed many examples already.

A separate petition online has gathered more than 220,000 signatures.

The new campaign has been organised by 40 women’s groups and individuals, including US-based Women, Action and the Media (WAM) and the Everyday Sexism project, a UK-based Twitter feed that encourages women to share incidences of perceived sexism.

In an open letter to the social media giant, the groups demand “swift, comprehensive and effective action addressing the representation of rape and domestic violence on Facebook” and say they are also asking Facebook users to contact companies whose adverts appear around the offending content.

Sky, American Express and Dove beauty products are among the brands affected. The letter also lists examples of material that the group feels is unacceptable. They include Facebook groups with titles such as “This is why Indian girls get raped” and individual uploads of graphic photographs showing abused women. One image of a woman lying at the foot of a flight of stairs is captioned “Next time, don’t get pregnant”.

Dove, a brand owned by Unilever, said it was “most upset” by the images, but both the brand and Facebook said the examples given had since been removed from the site. “Dove takes this issue very seriously and does not condone any activity that intentionally insults any audience,” said global communications director Stacie Bright. “We are working to refine our targeting terms in case any further pages like these are created. Facebook advertising targets people’s interests, not pages, and we do not select the pages our adverts appear on.”

Both Ms Bright and a spokesperson for Facebook told the BBC that the examples mentioned in the letter had now been removed from the site. “There is no place on Facebook for hate speech or content that is threatening, or incites violence, and we will not tolerate material deemed to be genuinely or directly harmful,” said Facebook in a statement. “We try to react quickly to remove reported language or images that violate our terms and we try to make it very easy for people to report questionable content using links located throughout the site.”

The company added, however, that not all material that some users might consider to be “vulgar and distasteful” actually violated its policies.

Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism project, told the BBC the campaign had been born out of “sheer frustration” from a large number women who had tried to complain about the material and had then contacted her. “Obviously it’s difficult to moderate a platform with one billion users but it is disproportionately affecting women,” she said. “Facebook does crack down on issues like anti-Semitism and has been praised for it but when they see images of women being raped they don’t consider that to be a form of hate speech.  “A lot of women are saying it’s preventing them from using Facebook.”

The social network has previously been taken to task for removing pictures of women breastfeeding infants and displaying their chests after mastectomy operations, she added. “I don’t think you can use the smokescreen of free speech when you take down other images which are often of women’s bodies,” said Ms Bates. She also said that the groups and Facebook were “in communication” and both were hoping for a resolution as soon as possible.

Study Warns One in Five Shops could Close by 2018

Study Warns One in Five Shops could Close by 2018
The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) is warning that High Streets could see 20% of their shops close down within five years as more people turn to the internet for their shopping. The organisation, which conducts research into retail, technology and crime, says this would equate to 62,000 shops closing down.

The CRR believes large areas of the UK’s High Streets would become housing. It also says as many as 316,000 workers would lose their jobs. It says online shopping will continue to expand and the proportion of shopping done via the internet will double to 22%.

The report, which was produced by Prof Joshua Bamfield, said the first shops to go would be pharmacies and health and beauty stores. Retailers specialising in music, books, cards, stationery and gifts will be next. DIY shops will also suffer.

In its report, the CRR compares the costs of opening a High Street store and an online warehouse. It says opening a small store on a High Street in the Midlands would cost about £10,000 a month, whereas opening an equivalent space in a warehouse on the outskirts of a similar town would cost between £650 and £1,800 a month.

The director general of the British Retail Consortium, Helen Dickinson, said the country would have to get used to a very different look and feel on the High Streets of the future.

The CRR estimates that there are about 280,000 shops across the country. Closures on the scale predicted by the organisation would leave 220,000 by 2018. It points out that 16 major retailers have gone into administration this year, with the loss of almost 15,000 jobs.

The latest official figures on retail spending from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed retail sales volumes in April were 0.5% higher than a year earlier, much less than expected, with consumers increasingly using the internet to do their shopping, rather than going out.

Buying Gifts for the Home & Garden with The Home & Gift Shop

Buying Gifts for the Home & Garden
Moving home is often considered one of the most stressful experiences a family can have, particularly if the process has been over an extended period and fraught with difficulties – organising the property chain, sorting removals and all of the other such issues. However, moving to a new home should also be a time to celebrate and the perfect time to treat ‘the home’ to a new home gift.

One of the first things most people do, often even before the removal van leaves is to put the kettle on and make all concerned a welcome cup of tea or coffee.  A new kettle or coffee machine is often an ideal ‘new home gift’ and will help everyone settle in quickly and help them feel at home. However, gifts for the kitchen are not the only gifts to help the new home experience, which could include a luxury bath set or some new bedding.

For visitors to the new home, it’s also often considered a good idea to have a gift in hand when you visit, helping them celebrate their new home with a gift that may be practical, useful, and a potential memory maker. We’ve come up with some ideas for both traditional gifts and new, and these include decorative scented coat hangers, Egyptian cotton towels, Sherpa throws or luxury bath and pedestal mats.

But where to find the time to go shopping for these homeware gifts? Moving into a new home is almost certainly a time consuming and stressful experience, with little time to go to the local shops searching for such items.

Online shopping websites such as the Home and Gift shop offer convenience and range, offering everything for the home and garden, including a diverse range of home & garden furniture, including a range of gift ideas for the kitchen and bedroom, many of which you probably never knew existed.

The internet now allows the consumer to be able to search a far wider choice of shopping merchandise than is sometimes available in out of town shopping malls or on the high street. And for those living in smaller towns or in the more rural locations, online shopping has become not just a convenience but, in many cases, can be a life line. The internet has also helped many shopping retailers to expand their business by giving them the opportunity to market their home furnishings and gift ideas to a much wider audience.

Buying a new home gift is simple with the great selection of practical, relaxing and celebratory gifts available in the Home and Gift Shop, offering everything for the home including kitchen gifts, bedroom furnishings and much more.

Apple 1 from 1976 signed by Wozniak sells for $650,000

Apple 1 from 1976 signed by Wozniak sells for $650,000
An original Apple 1 computer from 1976 – one of only six still in working order – has sold at auction in Germany for more than 500,000 euros ($650,000).

The Apple 1 was one of the first 50 built by Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in Jobs’ parents’ garage. The computer – consisting only of a motherboard, signed by Mr Wozniak – went to an anonymous buyer from Asia.

Last year, an Apple 1 sold for 490,000 euros (£418,000; $633,000).

Only about 200 Apple 1s were ever made. About 46 remain in existence, but only six of those are still in working order.  Bob Luther, author of The First Apple, called the Apple 1 the “holy grail of collectable technology”.

The one sold at auction in the German city of Cologne on Saturday was purchased together with an original monitor, tape-player, keyboard. The documentation was signed by Steve Jobs.

Wedding Stationary, Packaging Makes it Perfect

Wedding Stationary, Packaging Makes it Perfect
When planning a wedding, couples seem to spend a lot of time focussed on certain aspects of the big day, such choosing the perfect dress or picking a stunning venue. Whilst these are certainly important aspects of a wedding, few allow themselves enough time to choose the right wedding stationary. Rather than choosing something at the last minute, couples should look around to find the stationary worthy of their special day.

Wedding stationary doesn’t just include those all-important invitations but depending on how formal a couple wants their wedding to be, can include save-the-date cards, reply cards and envelopes, reception and map cards (if the reception is at a separate venue), place cards for the reception tables and even thank-you cards and envelopes. Of course, not of all of these are essential and those chosen will depend on personal preferences.

Choosing Wedding Stationary
If a couple wants their wedding to have a theme running through it, it makes sense for them to stick to a certain style of wedding stationary throughout. There are many specialist suppliers of wedding stationary, and the best ones will have a truly exquisite selection of papers, perfect for creating incredibly tasteful stationary for that magical fairytale wedding. Whether a wedding is intended to embody prestige or sparkle with style, buying stationary from a specialist retailer is key.

‘Acquerello’ for Luxury Stationary
Many couples who want truly elegant wedding stationary choose ‘Acquerello’ stationary, as it provides the perfect canvas for their chosen wording. ‘Acquerello’ means watercolour in Italian – a word just as beautiful as the paper that it describes. Delectable and creamy, its rich shades give a luxurious look to all forms of wedding stationary. Importantly, it feels just as good as it looks, with an unmistakable feel of true quality – perfect for an occasion as special as a couple solidifying their love.

‘Tintoretto’ for Creative Stationary
‘Tintoretto’ provides a more organic style of wedding stationary, a little more rough and ready than the straight lines of laid paper seen in the ‘Acquerello’ style. It has a unique ‘hammered’ texture yet still remains refined. It’s unique style makes it perfect for a range of creative designs. The unique selling point of ‘Tintoretto’ stationary is it’s texture, which is oddly satisfying, making it perfect for wedding invitations which people will spend a lot of time handling.

‘Pearly’ Stationary for Unadulterated Class
For those couples who want their wedding to look and feel like it’s just jumped from the pages of a fairy story, ‘Pearly’ wedding stationary is ideal. With a shimmering metallic shine, ‘Pearly’ paper oozes class. It really does turn up the wow factor and any guest receiving a ‘Pearly’ invite will feel like they’ve just been invited to the wedding of the year! This stationary is perfect for couples who want to make their big day ultra special.

IMF: UK Austerity will be a ‘Drag on Growth’

IMF: UK Austerity will be a ‘Drag on Growth’
The UK’s planned austerity measures will be a drag on economic growth, the International Monetary Fund has warned.

In the concluding statement of its mission to the UK, the global body said the economy was still a long way from “a strong and sustainable recovery”.

The IMF acknowledged that the government’s austerity measures had earned it credibility.

But it added that fiscal policy needed to balance debt sustainability with growth concerns.

Speaking at a press conference in London, the IMF’s deputy managing director, David Lipton, suggested the government should slow the rate of its austerity programme by bringing forward measures like infrastructure spending.

“It would be, in our view, useful for the economy for infrastructure and other measures to be brought forward to reduce the drag of austerity measures… and provide more support for the economy,” he said, in response to questions from journalists.

However he admitted there was “no single silver bullet” for the UK’s economic problems

Why do We Need to Undertake Sound Testing

Why do We Need to Undertake Sound Testing
We often get asked by clients ‘why do we need to undertake sound testing’ and ‘how much of a difference does noise really make’. This can be answered in one word – Huge!  One simple measure of noise pollution is the danger it poses to general health.

Noise can cause stress, and stress is a leading cause of illness and fatigue.  Therefore any form of excess noise can be considered

Here is a list of the typical noise events we encounter during our daily lives and the corresponding noise levels:

  • 0dB Threshold of Audibility – Rustle of leaves
  • 30dB Quiet conversation or in a quiet location in the      country
  • 45dB Typical office space. Ambience in the city at      night
  • 50dB Background noise in an office
  • 60dB The sound of an average radio
  • 70dB The sound of a car passing on the street
  • 80dB An intercity train from a station platform/loud      music in a home
  • 90dB Pneumatic drill at 3 metes / sound of a truck      passing on the street
  • 100dB Jet plane taking off at 50 metes /sound of a rock      band
  • 115dB Limit of sound permitted in industry / Screaming      baby
  • 120dB Deafening
  • 60-130 dB Dog Barking
  • 140dB Threshold of pain

Noise is transient; once the pollution stops the environment is free of it. To many people the roar of an engine is satisfying or thrilling; to others it is an annoyance. Loud music may be enjoyable or a torment, depending on the listener and the circumstances. Broadly speaking,

By improving sound insulation on your home the noise levels from your neighbours TV, Stereo and barking dog   Can be greatly reduced, this in turn can reduce stress and fatigue. Taking this into account, sound testing is more important now than ever.

Yahoo to Buy Tumblr for $1.1bn

Yahoo to Buy Tumblr for $1.1bn
Yahoo’s board has approved a deal to buy New York-based blogging service Tumblr for $1.1bn (£725m), US media reports say. The acquisition is expected to be announced as early as today.

The BBC website are reporting that the deal was a “foregone conclusion” and was unanimously voted for by the board, tech blog AllThingsD reported, citing sources close to the matter.

If confirmed, it will be CEO Marissa Mayer’s largest deal since taking the helm of Yahoo in July 2012.

Neither Yahoo nor Tumblr responded immediately to requests for comment.

Under the terms of the acquisition, Tumblr would continue to operate as an independent business, the Wall Street Journal said, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation. The company is currently run by David Karp, a 26-year-old New Yorker who founded Tumblr in 2007, and he is expected to remain in his role.

Analysts say that by acquiring Tumblr, Yahoo will gain a larger social media presence and enhance its ability to attract younger audiences in its battle with internet rivals Google and Facebook.  Ms Mayer, a former Google executive, has already made a number of small acquisitions since taking over at Yahoo, but the Tumblr deal is expected to be the biggest.

A $1.1bn price tag would represent a significant premium on Tumblr’s $800m valuation when it last raised money from private investors.

Tumblr combines elements of blogging with social networking, and its simple design has attracted millions of users since its launch.  According to its homepage, it now hosts 108 million blogs, with a total of 50.7 billion posts. It also has a significant presence on mobile devices.

But despite its fast-growing user base it has struggled to make money, and has traditionally resisted advertising. It announced that limited use of adverts would be rolled out in April last year, but made just $13m in revenues for 2012, according to a report by Forbes magazine. It is unclear whether a deal with Yahoo would result in more adverts on Tumblr.

Yahoo remains a giant in the internet world, with around 700 million visitors to its website every month. The majority of its revenues come from advertising. But it has limited mobile reach and lags behind Google in the search engine rankings. It also shed more than 1,000 jobs during 2012 and has long been divided over whether it should focus on media content or on tools and technologies.
